This novel, like several other Velikić’s works, draws from author’s life experiences, from his childhood and youth that were spent in Pula, and from the life in the cities, in which his characters reside or which they travel to. Velikić does not perceive journeys only as a change of environment, for him they are a path to insight, interesting and catchy mostly, until they reach the final destination. The journey is a desire for change and departure, for escape, it is interwoven with encounters of unimportant, ordinary things, which are, by Velikić’s opinion, the essence of literary creativity. Velikić likes to inspect anonymous people and their daily life, but unlike one of his favourite writers, Ivo Andrić, whose works are filled with irony, even sarcasm, cynicism, and anger, while his characters frequently fall victim to author’s mockery, Velikić manages to keep with refined irony. Author addresses an elite reader, who is capable of following demanding stories and numerous characters, with few additional meanders for every “sub-story”, who is, just as he is about to give up due to the glorious waterfall of words, events and descriptions, returned to the calm pool of clear and deep narration, frequently with surprising and unexpected outcome. At the end of the journey only questions and insights remain, along with the yearning for a new escape.

Dragan Velikić was born in 1953 in Belgrade. He moved to Pula as a child together with his parents, where he stayed until going to Belgrade for studies. He graduated at the Department for literature and literary theory of the Philological Faculty of the University of Belgrade. He was also a rock musician, playing keyboard in various musical groups. From 1994 to 1999 he was the editor of the publishing house Radio B92, which published several works by contemporary European classics during his term. He wrote columns for weekly NIN, independent weekly Vreme, daily Danas, magazines Reporter and Status. From June 2005 until November 2009 he served as the ambassador of Serbia and Montenegro and after of Serbia in Vienna. He currently lives in Belgrade as a freelance writer. Velikić is the author of nine novels: Via Pula (1988; Miloš Crnjanski Award), Astrahan (1991; Slovenian translation 2004), Hamsin 51 (1993), Severni zid (Northern Wall, 1995), Dantejev trg (1997), Slučaj Bremen (The Bremen Case, 2001), Dosije Domaševski (Domasewski Files, 2003), Ruski prozor (Russian Window, 2007; Nin Award, Meša Selimović Award, Central European Literary Award), and Bonavia (2012), and short story collections Pogrešan pokret (Wrong Move, 1983), Staklena bašta (Greenhouse Garden, 1985), Beograd i druge priče (Belgrade and Other Stories, 2009), essays YU-tlantida (1993), Deponija (Depony, 1994), Stanje stvari (How Things Are, 1998), Pseća pošta (Dog Mail, 2006), O piscima i gradovima (About Writers and Cities, 2010), and a book of selected interviews 39,5 (2010).
